Hybrid walk
A useful skip becomes a runaway in shear
Hybrids are the club people blame on their hands when the prairie gust is the one walking the ball. We split hop height from walk length so the gust has a line of its own.
The usual lie
Same hop, longer crawl
On a still thaw morning the hybrid hops once and dies, which feels like “a good hybrid.” On a September afternoon the hop height is almost the same and the walk has doubled. That is not a new swing. That is a sail. Face a hair flatter, or a ball that does not hop as tall, often kills the extra feet without a new head.
What we refuse
Replacing a 4-iron because a monitor said so
If the hop cluster is already tight and the walk is the only sin, we do not retire the iron family for a hybrid fashion. We mark the hybrid you own. If it crawls, we change it. If the 4-iron hops cleaner on this crust, the sheet will say to keep the iron. Catalogs hate that sentence. The tape does not.
